How SMP Scar Camouflage Works

Scar camouflage uses the same precision micropigmentation technique as standard SMP, but with specialised adjustments for scar tissue. Pigment is carefully deposited into the scar and surrounding area to reduce contrast, simulate hair follicles within the scar boundary, and restore scalp uniformity.

FUE Scar Camouflage (Dot Scars)

FUE leaves hundreds of tiny puncture scars. Camouflage involves matching pigment to the surrounding hair and skin tone, then selectively treating high-contrast spots to reduce their visibility under short hair.

FUT Scar Camouflage (Line Scars)

FUT produces a linear scar. The technician builds pigment across the scar line and blends it outward into the surrounding density, breaking up the visual line that gives the scar away. This may require slightly more sessions than standard SMP.

Scar Types That Respond Well

FUE scars — The small dot scars left by Follicular Unit Extraction are often ideal for camouflage. Pigment is matched to the surrounding scalp and placed to reduce the contrast between scarred and healthy tissue.

FUT scars — Linear scars from strip harvesting can be significantly softened. The pigmentation is layered across the scar line and diffused into the surrounding area to break up the linear edge and reduce shadowing.

Injury scars — Scars resulting from cuts, burns or other trauma to the scalp can often be camouflaged, provided the scar is stable and the skin has adequate vascular supply.

Surgical scars — Scars from neurosurgery, skin grafts or previous cosmetic procedures are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Mature, healed scars typically respond more predictably than recent scarring.

When SMP May Not Be Appropriate

There are situations where scar camouflage SMP is not advised or where outcomes may be limited:

  • Active keloid formation — If your scar is actively growing or you have a history of keloid development, SMP may not be appropriate until the scar is fully stable.
  • Unhealed or recent scars — Scars should be at least 12 months post-injury or surgery to ensure the tissue has matured and pigment retention can be accurately predicted.
  • Significantly raised or hypertrophic scarring — SMP adds colour but does not flatten raised tissue. Very pronounced ridges may still cast shadows or remain palpable even after pigmentation.
  • Ongoing infection or skin conditions — Active dermatitis, psoriasis or infection in the treatment area must be resolved before proceeding.

Why Every Scar Responds Differently to Treatment

No two scars are alike. Even scars from the same procedure — such as two FUE transplants — can differ in depth, width, colour, and how the surrounding skin has healed. Some scars sit flat and respond predictably to pigment. Others are raised, wider, or lack the vascular supply that helps pigment settle evenly. This variability is why a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for scar camouflage.

Most scar camouflage treatments require 2–3 sessions spaced approximately 10–14 days apart, depending on scar size, type and pigment retention. FUT linear scars typically require more layering than isolated FUE dot scars.

Pigment longevity: Scar tissue can metabolise pigment faster than healthy skin. While standard scalp SMP typically lasts 4–6 years, scar camouflage may require a refresh every 2–4 years. This is discussed openly during your consultation so you can plan accordingly.

How many sessions does scar camouflage take?
